A-10 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE Pride Guide 2001
GLSEN helps youth by working to change schools
by Karen Hammack
Cleveland-The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network has been helping LGBT youth here since 1995.
Under the able leadership of our cochairs Judy Montgomery and Ed Simon, we have grown tremendously. This year we have the largest board since our chapter's inception, and have had a fantastic year.
People ask us what we do. Our mission statement reads:
"GLSEN is striving to create learning environments that affirm the inherent dignity of all students, and, in so doing, teaches them to respect and accept all of their classmates-regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity or gender expression. GLSEN Cleveland welcomes stu-
dents, educators, families, and other community members-of any sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression-as members who share this goal." GLSEN's work focuses on local organizing to create change in hometown schools. We work to influence public policy to ensure that basic protections are in place for
help of teacher training materials and inclusive curricular resources:

groups that address LGBT issues.
We have monthly meetings to support our membership and to provide resources and information. We respond to e-mail and phone requests for information or assistance. If we don't have the information, we refer people to other resources. We also staff information tables at many LGBT functions, community festivals and educational seminars and publish monthly newsletters.
During the month of June we host an
annual Awards Dinner. At this dinner we honor our local "pathfinders" (people who have made an impact on education). We also award the Robbie Kirkland Memorial Scholarship and announce the winners of the Robbie Kirkland Essay Contest.
Twice yearly we also send representatives to GLSEN's national Leadership Training Institute. GLSEN also promotes annual Back-to-School/Speak Out For Youth campaigns. This gives people the chance to write back to their schools to tell them how it was for them being LGBT in school, or to talk about a friend's experience in school.
Please join us and help our youth have a safe educational experience. Contact us at http://www.glsencleveland.org, or write us at GLSEN Cleveland, P.O. Box 601, Wickliffe Ohio 44092.

one's gender identity. There are e-mail groups that offer both information and support for all.
Transfamily of Cleveland is a sponsor of SSAFE, Safe Schools Are For Everyone, along with P-FLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Members have spoken about transgender issues at high schools and colleges, to physician groups, and to law enforcement groups in Ohio and neighboring states.
In the fall, Transfamily of Cleveland will host a meeting of psychologists, social workers, and school guidance counselors. The subject of the meeting, which will qualify for continuing education credits for the attendees, is "Transgender and Transsexual Issues
in 2001 and Beyond."
The Internet has enabled Transfamily of Cleveland to extend helping hands to transgendered individuals and their families across the globe. Visit our web site at www.transfamily.org and visit us in person
on the first Thursday of each month. For the location of our meetings, e-mail info@transfamily.org or call Karen at 216691-4357 (691-HELP).
